hearts + hands: a raffle for japan

help japan, fundraisers, community, raffle, artists, japan tsunami 2011, hearts and hands, portland fundraiser, japan earthquake fundraiser, how to help japan
HEARTS + HANDS is a community effort organized by Lynn Russell of Satsuma Press. What has happened and is happening in Japan is heartbreaking – and we believe there are ways, both big and small, to help.

This is what we are able to do – give something from the heart, made by our hands.

More than fifty independent artists and studios, including grayling, have agreed to donate prizes for a raffle – and that list is still growing. Raffle tickets are for sale now at www.heartsandhandsforjapan.blogspot.com for $10 each.

100% of the proceeds from the HEARTS + HANDS raffle will be donated to relief efforts in Japan in the aftermath of the March 11th earthquake and tsunami.

happenings: temple st clair trunk show

from the Temple St Clair blog:
"... the new Odyssey Collection launched in August. A journey from East to West finding inspiration from the richness of the Persian Empire to the ancient city of Troy in Asia Minor, and the 19th century love of Orientalism. From signature rock crystal amulets adorned with sultry evil eyes to golden amphora vessels to Victorian inspired gypsy rings, this collection features exquisitely rare rubies, emeralds and sapphires."

Let me say I am in L-O-V-E with the ring shown above and the earrings shown below, both by Temple St Clair.

black smithing classes!

portland,oregon,blacksmith,classes,workshops,learn how to

The good people of Neighborhood Notes always bring something to my attention that inevitably enriches my life. Two items come to mind, in particular.

The first was a recent article about the neighborhood near my new studio/showroom. I felt like exploring the Central Eastside even further after reading it. I love supporting local places and it's a little easier if you know where to look among the warehouses.

The second was an in-depth story about Blacksmiths in the Portland area. It left me feeling antsy and excited (and frankly, jealous of the workshops the artisans in the story work in)!

Lo and behold, I discovered Bridgetown Forge offers smithing workshops! These appear to be drastically different than the jewelry smithing classes I've taken in the past. When the course ends, you walk away with a Japanese style knife or a heavy bowl. The owner, Arnon Kartmazov, has been trained by famous Israeli black smith Uri Hofi.

Check out the class listing here.

de young museum

The de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park, California looks like an amazing place. I've never been there, but it's on my (very long) list of places to go.

Recently, they placed an order for my jewelry line, g r a y l i n g. It will be sold in the museum store beginning in August 2010. I am thrilled.
