An open studio event is in the works that will combine the talents of seven jewelry designers who live and design in the Pacific Northwest.

-:: UNCOMMON JEWELS ::-

...will take place December 17th, from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., in an as-of-yet undisclosed location in Portland, Oregon.

Limited edition work and collections from jewelry artists Alisha Louise, Amy Bengston, Betsy & Iya, grayling, Lauren Harkness, Sahlia, and stone + honey will be showcased.

The evening will include complimentary artistic gift wrap and a hosted wine bar.

black smithing classes!

The good people of Neighborhood Notes always bring something to my attention that inevitably enriches my life. Two items come to mind, in particular.

The first was a recent article about the neighborhood near my new studio/showroom. I felt like exploring the Central Eastside even further after reading it. I love supporting local places and it's a little easier if you know where to look among the warehouses.

The second was an in-depth story about Blacksmiths in the Portland area. It left me feeling antsy and excited (and frankly, jealous of the workshops the artisans in the story work in)!

Lo and behold, I discovered Bridgetown Forge offers smithing workshops! These appear to be drastically different than the jewelry smithing classes I've taken in the past. When the course ends, you walk away with a Japanese style knife or a heavy bowl. The owner, Arnon Kartmazov, has been trained by famous Israeli black smith Uri Hofi.

happenings: STS open studio

I love jewelry, flowers, plants, and things that smell good... don't you?

Then don't miss Subject to Season.... a gathering of some of my most-loved artists and designers in Portland.

Between 4-8pm, we'll get a rare chance to view (and hopefully purchase) jewelry from Hazel Cox and perfumes from Olo Fragrance (I've been wearing the Violet/Leather perfume since Fall... I'm uhhhb-sessed!).

Megan of Fieldwork Floral Operation will be hosting (I hope to get a few pots for my new showroom!), and Kim Namanny will be on hand with of-the-moment hair and styling tips.

Lately, it seems everyone is getting hitched.

Therefore, it's no surprise the inquiries for custom bridal jewelry have been rolling in. (Is finding good jewelry really almost as hard as finding a good mate?)

Naturally, working with brides has piqued my interest in other aspects of wedding planning. Luckily, there are a ton of wedding photographers, make-up artists, and talented designers in Portland!

I just got off the phone with Andrea, the Owner of August Veils. Andrea has been creating veils, tiaras, and hairpieces for over ten years. She is a partner at The Bridal Loft (a co-op of kick-ass wedding planning angels, if you will) and I love her work.

I considered wearing a veil for my 2005 wedding, but fell short on time and resources. If I had to do it all over again (minus my joyful sobs throughout the entire ceremony) I would definitely go with this beauty from August Veils:

rules of fashion: age is just a number

Portland fashion stylist and makeup artist Kami Gray recently posted some great tips worth sharing on her blog. Read on...

Let your wardrobe make you look and feel years younger

Tips from Stylist Kami Gray

1) Stop matching everything! Your shoes, purse, and belt do NOT have to match and shows your age because it’s a very “old school” rule. Mix it up with tones that compliment each other like gray, brown, navy, and black.

2) Don’t worry about dressing like your daughter. Here’s the quick test for determining if you’re dressing too young: Would your daughter wear YOUR outfit? If the answer is decidedly a NO WAY, you’re probably good to go.

3) Flip-flop dressier items. Instead of dressing up a collared blouse and blazer combo with your pearls and delicate jewelry; do practically the opposite. Pair that blazer up with a tunic-length T-shirt with some chunky, glam jewelry, and a leather hip-slung belt.

4) Wear something unexpected. Hit the streets for inspiration. Use trend-setters you see on NW 23rd or SE Hawthorne and borrow one idea and incorporate it into your ensemble. I’m not about to go punk from head to toe, but a black leather cuff would be just the thing to pair with a pale pink blazer worn over a white t-shirt, your favorite bootcut jeans, and pair of chunky black boots. Keep them guessing by adding an unexpected touch!

5) Throw the rules out the window. My least favorite term is “age appropriate.” Wear what you like, what matches your personality, and what makes you feel good. Trust your instincts. Don’t get stuck because you’re over 40 or you're a Mom. Be the shining star you are meant to be at this age and all ages to come and let go of age rules and restrictions.
